There’s a certain feeling that comes with a clean home, isn’t there? It’s more than just a tidy space. It’s a sense of calm, of order, of being able to breathe a little deeper.

Yesterday, I spend a couple hours cleaning and organizing my bathroom. I had been procrasting and I finially hit my limit. And I got it done! What a great feeling!

It also got me thinking about how small habits can make a big difference in keeping our homes clean and manageable. You don’t need to spend hours scrubbing every day—sometimes it’s the simple, consistent actions that add up over time.

For example, wiping down the kitchen counters after every meal or taking just ten minutes each night to declutter can go a long way in preventing mess from piling up. It’s all about finding little hacks that work for you and fit into your routine.

Plus, once you get into the rhythm of these habits, it feels so much easier to stay on top of everything without feeling overwhelmed.

With that said, I have come up with a list of hacks that would be great for to implement during spring cleaning and keep them going through out the year!

Deep Cleaning & Maintenance Hacks

1. Master the Top-to-Bottom, Left-to-Right Rule

This is the golden rule of cleaning for a reason. Always start with the highest surfaces in a room and work your way down. Dust light fixtures, ceiling fans, and the tops of cabinets first. That way, all the dust and debris falls to the floor, which you’ll clean last. Combining this with a left-to-right pattern ensures you don’t miss a single spot.

2. Steam Clean Your Microwave

Forget scrubbing a food-caked microwave. Fill a microwave-safe bowl with one cup of water and a few tablespoons of white vinegar (or a sliced lemon).

Microwave it on high for about 5 minutes, until the window steams up. Let it sit for another 5 minutes to let the steam do its work, then effortlessly wipe the inside clean with a paper towel.

3. Use Dryer Sheets for More Than Laundry

Those little scented sheets are surprisingly versatile. Use a fresh one to wipe down baseboards, and you’ll find it not only picks up dust but also repels future buildup. They are also fantastic for wiping down dusty TV screens and blinds.

4. Let Your Stove Clean Itself

Well, almost. For stubborn, burnt-on food on a glass stovetop, sprinkle a generous layer of baking soda over the mess. Then, spritz it with a little white vinegar.

It will start to fizz, which is the reaction breaking down the grime. Lay a hot, damp dish towel over the area for 15 minutes, then wipe it all away.

5. Refresh Your Mattress with Baking Soda

Your mattress works hard. To freshen it up, strip the bed and sprinkle baking soda all over the surface. Let it sit for at least an hour (the longer, the better) to absorb odors. Then, use your vacuum’s upholstery attachment to suck it all up.

6. Make Your Stainless Steel Shine

I’ve seen so many people struggle with streaky stainless steel. The secret is simple: a few drops of olive oil. After cleaning your appliances with your usual cleaner, put a small amount of olive oil on a soft cloth and buff the surface in the direction of the grain. It leaves a beautiful, streak-free shine and helps repel fingerprints.

Decluttering & Organizing Hacks

7. The One-In, One-Out Rule

This is a game-changer for preventing clutter from accumulating in the first place. Every time you bring something new into your home—a new shirt, a new book, a new mug—an old one has to go. This simple rule keeps your possessions in check and forces you to be mindful of what you acquire.

8. Use the “Four-Box” Method

When you’re tackling a cluttered room, the decisions can be paralyzing. Simplify the process with four boxes labeled: Keep, Donate/Sell, Trash, and Relocate.

Everything you pick up must go into one of these boxes. No exceptions. This eliminates the habit of just moving clutter from one spot to another.

9. Create a “Get Out of Jail Free” Bin

We all have those little items we don’t know what to do with but aren’t ready to part with.

Create an “out of sight” bin for these things. Put them in the bin and store it away for six months. If you haven’t needed anything from it in that time, you can confidently donate the entire box without even looking inside.

10. Digitize Your Paper Clutter

Piles of paper are a huge source of visual stress. Take an afternoon to go digital. Scan important documents, recipes, and kids’ artwork, and save them to a cloud service. For mail, adopt a “one-touch” rule: open it by the recycling bin and immediately discard junk, file what’s necessary, and act on what needs a response.

11. Organize Drawers with Vertical Folding

Instead of stacking clothes in drawers, fold them into neat little rectangles and file them vertically. This technique, made popular by Marie Kondo, allows you to see everything you own at a glance. No more digging through piles to find that one specific t-shirt.

Everyday Efficiency Hacks

12. The 15-Minute Tidy-Up

This is my secret weapon for busy moms. Set a timer for 15 minutes every evening and have everyone in the family pitch in. In that short burst, you can put away toys, load the dishwasher, wipe down counters, and reset the living room. It’s amazing what you can accomplish in just 15 focused minutes.

13. Clean as You Go

This one sounds obvious, but it’s a habit that needs to be built. While you’re waiting for water to boil, wipe down the counters. After you brush your teeth, quickly wipe the sink. These tiny actions take seconds but prevent grime from building up, making deep cleaning sessions much less frequent and intense.

14. Keep Cleaning Caddies

Don’t waste time hunting for cleaning supplies. Create small, portable cleaning caddies for each major area of your home. Keep one under the kitchen sink and one in each bathroom with all the necessary supplies for that room. When you see a mess, you can clean it instantly.

15. Put Your Dishwasher to Work

Your dishwasher can clean more than just dishes. On the top rack, you can wash things like plastic kids’ toys, soap dishes, and even sponges and scrub brushes. This is an easy way to sanitize some of the grimiest items in your home.

16. Use a Squeegee in the Shower

To prevent soap scum and mildew from building up, keep a squeegee in your shower. After every use, take 30 seconds to wipe down the glass and tile walls. This simple step dramatically reduces how often you need to do a deep scrub of the bathroom.

17. Embrace the Power of a “Closing Shift”

Think of it like closing a restaurant for the night. Before you go to bed, perform a quick “closing shift” on your kitchen. Wipe down the counters, start the dishwasher, and put everything back in its place. Waking up to a clean kitchen is a powerful and motivating way to start your day. It sets a positive tone and makes you feel like you’re already ahead.

A clean home isn’t about perfection; it’s about creating a peaceful environment where you can relax and thrive. I hope these hacks inspire you to build small, sustainable habits that lead to a cleaner, happier home all year long.
